More greenery, improved water retention, greater biodiversity and an attractive space for relaxation. This is another part of the changes awaiting the residents of Krosno under the project “Our Krosno: Green, Entreprising and Co-managed with Residents”, co-financed by the Swiss Funds and the state budget.

One of the most important environmental missions will be the second stage of the development of the park on Chopina Street, as well as the implementation of a programme for the development of green areas throughout the city. The project responds to the challenges posed by climate change, the need to improve air quality and the need to increase the city’s resilience to increasingly frequent heatwaves and heavy rainfall. As part of the project, more than 6 hectares of new green areas will be created in Krosno, improving residents’ quality of life and having a positive impact on the local ecosystem.

The second stage of the expansion of the sensory park on Chopina Street

One of the key elements of the project is the implementation of the second stage of the development of the park on Chopina Street. It will cover the northern part of the area, approximately 2,800 m² in size, located next to the Fryderyk Chopin Family Allotment Garden. The investment will continue the first stage, which was completed in 2023.

The most important feature of the new part of the park will be a retention basin, which will allow rainwater to be collected and distributed naturally. Thanks to the use of appropriately selected riparian vegetation, the water will be purified of dust and heavy metals, while the entire system will maintain the natural water cycle, supporting the development of local fauna and flora.

A wooden viewing shelter and walking and viewing platforms will also be created around the basin, enabling residents to experience closer contact with nature. The new section will be connected with the previously built “dry river”, creating a coherent and attractive recreational space.

Greenery that supports the city

The expansion of the park is not only about improving aesthetics. The project uses nature-based solutions that help counteract the effects of climate change. The selection of plant species has been planned so that they are resistant to urban conditions and periodic droughts, while also increasing biodiversity and improving air quality. Ecological and durable materials will also be used, along with solutions supporting water retention.

The Green Gateway to the Bieszczady Mountains

Another important undertaking will be the implementation of the “Green Gateway to the Bieszczady Mountains” project, which includes the development of green areas along the main entry roads to the city: Bieszczadzka Street, Podkarpacka Street, Jana Pawła II Avenue and Kazimierza Pużaka Street.

On an area of nearly 5.8 hectares, new trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, perennials, climbing plants and flower meadows will be planted. The plantings will not only improve the aesthetics of the urban space, but also reduce air pollution, increase water retention and create better conditions for pollinating insects and birds.

A city more resilient to climate change

The planned investments respond to problems identified in the city’s strategic documents, such as a shortage of green areas, heatwaves, local flooding and deteriorating air quality. Thanks to new green areas, retention solutions and environmental education, Krosno will become a city better prepared for the challenges of climate change, while also becoming even more resident-friendly.

This is another step towards creating a modern, green and climate-resilient Krosno, where environmentally friendly solutions go hand in hand with improving residents’ quality of life.
