An invitation to community organizing. Summary

4 initiative groups and more than 10 individual locals turned up for the meeting, the intention of which was to encourage the residents of Krosno to get involved in the process for the kind of changes in the immediate environment they themselves want.

The event went according to plan. The meeting was opened by Anna Zielińska, a Krosno community organizer, who discussed to the participants what the Local Development Program is, what goals our city has set in the implementation of the K+R+O+S+N+O = KROSNO project, and why the development path related to the inclusion of residents in the co-management of the city is so important. Subsequently, the substantive part was joined by: Justyna Szymanska and Magdalena Widuch from the Center for Strategic Consulting, a company specializing in the development of public participation in Poland, who explained the basics of community organizing - a knowledge used in the UK for more than 10 years. At the end, Damian Piórko Ziemba, a Krosno community organizer, gave examples of his work in the field with people, making the participants of the meeting aware of what community organizing can bring.

The second hour of the meeting was engaging. Using the example of the groups gathered, their individual stories, course of action, achievements and failures, a case study was explored. Representatives of the groups told what brought them together, why they work together and what their goal is. In turn, the speakers together with community organizers, based on their knowledge and experiences, reflected and presented possible options for what could happen if the groups incorporate elements of the so-called community organizing cycle.

The event was also an opportunity to explore basic information about the model for people aspiring to become community organizers, for whom this topic is so interesting that they would like to follow a similar path as Anna and Damian. In the project "Community Organizing in the City of Krosno" funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, it will be possible to take part in professional training and explore the model of community participation, which has been working perfectly for more than 10 years in British conditions and is a ready model to be followed by other countries, which are slowly recognizing that it is in local communities that there is the greatest potential to change the world for the better. What's more, one of the people who undergoes the 4-day training and best performs (in the form of volunteering) a sample of the work of a community organizer, the so-called listening phase, will be hired to implement activities in the venture.
